The HIM program at Greenville Technical College teaches students to work with and manage health-related information in a 1 + 1 format, with general education courses in Phase I and HIM courses in Phase II. Greenville Technical College offers a full-time, on-campus program as well as an online, part time program, both requiring a professional practice experience completed in health care facilities during normal business hours. Phase I includes a group of general education and related courses which may be completed at Greenville Technical College or at any regionally accredited college. Phase II courses are available at Greenville Technical College’s Benson Campus and online. Both include professional practice experiences, which are completed in health care facilities during normal business hours.

The associate degree program at Greenville Technical College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) and meets the educational standards for a Health Information Management program.

Midlands Technical College currently offers an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in Health Information Management (HIM) and a Certificate in Health Sciences in Medical Record Coder (MRC).

As a one year certificate program, the Medical Record Coder (MRC) program offers a full-time, three semester, intense concentration in medical coding. Information about the MRC certificate is found under the Medical Record Coder heading farther into the Health Sciences section of this catalog. Movement into the second phase (HIM degree) is achieved by successful completion of the Pre-Health Information Management certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher.

As a two-phase associate degree program, the HIM Associate Degree in Applied Science Program requires general education instruction to be completed prior to the professional education and clinical experience component of the curriculum, with the award of a certificate in Pre-Health Information Management (Pre-HIM).  This format allows for a more prepared student to enter the HIM classroom, as well as the clinical sites. Information about the Pre-HIM certificate and the HIM Degree are found immediately following this introduction. Students who complete the Health Information Management Associate in Applied Science Degree can make application to earn a Bachelor’s Degree through a 2+2 agreement the college has with USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C.
